Travel the Sahtú by jetboat and experience the Sahtú like never before!
Start your adventure off in Délı̨nę, the only community on the shores of Great Bear Lake (also known as Sahtú). Great Bear Lake is the 8thlargest freshwater lake in the world and is known for its crystal-clear waters and world record lake trout fishing. Délı̨nę is a remote community where traditions and culture are still rich within their people (Sahtúgot’ı̨nę).
Next, travel down the Great Bear River (Sahtú deh) and through the Great Bear River rapids to Tulı́t’a, where traditions and culture are also valued and rich within the community. Tulı́t’a is well known for their drumming music from the Mountain Dene (Shútahgot’ı̨nę), many of their songs are sung all over the North. You’ll also get a chance to view the famous Bear Rock, a historical site that has high cultural significance (like a Notre dame to the local culture).
Then we’re off to Norman Wells on the mighty Mackenzie River (Deh cho), Canada’s longest river system. Norman Wells has a long history of resource development; oil was first discovered there in 1911. There was natural seepage that the local Dene would use to create waterproof barriors on their birchbark canoes and kayaks.
The discovery of this oil played a major role in WWII, where a pipeline was built through the Mackenzie Mountains into the Yukon and became a source for military operations in Alaska and the Yukon. The pipeline is now known as the Canol Trail now and is a popular hiking trail (over 300 kms). It’s considered one of the most challenging trails in Canada.
After Norman Wells, we’ll continue north along the Mackenzie River to Fort Good Hope through the Ramparts (Fee Yee) and the San Sault rapids. In Fort Good Hope, you’ll get a chance to visit the famous Our Lady of Good Hope Church that was built in 1865. Get a chance to see its beautiful interior firsthand. Fort Good Hope is very rich with tradition and culture and is home to some of the best storytellers in the Sahtú. You will not leave Fort Good Hope without a sore stomach from a good laugh!
Lastly, continue north down the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Circle where many people cannot say they’ve been! We then travel back to Fort Good Hope where your Sahtu Boat Adventure ends. *Please note that Colville Lake is not accessible by boat from Fort Good Hope. Arrangements can be made to travel to Colville Lake by plane, but is not part of the Sahtu Boat Adventure package.
While travelling the Sahtú, your guide will provide you with some local cuisine, as well history of its people and the land. If you desire, they’ll also teach you some on the land skills. This adventure is the first of its kind in the Sahtú, so scroll down to the bottom of the page, contact us and you can book now. We promise to send you home with an experience of a lifetime
